September is a delightful month to travel and explore the enchanting continent of Europe. As the summer crowds disperse and the weather remains pleasant, you’ll find yourself immersed in a unique blend of cultural experiences, historical landmarks, and breathtaking landscapes!

THE BEST TRAVEL DESTINATIONS IN EUROPE

SEPTEMBER 2023!

Whether you’re a history buff, a food lover, or an adventure seeker, Europe has something to offer for everyone. Let’s dive into some of the best places to visit in Europe during September:

1. Paris, France

I lived in France for 7 years and I can say without a doubt that Paris, the City of Love, is even more charming in September. The weather is mild, and the city is less crowded, allowing you to fully appreciate its iconic landmarks. Take a leisurely stroll along the Seine River, visit the Louvre Museum (if you don’t mind the crowds), Montmartre, and marvel at the Eiffel Tower. Don’t forget to indulge in delicious pastries and experience the vibrant café culture.

My top 3 favorite pastry shops (I’m VERY passionate about this subject) are:

  • Michalak
  • Jardin Sucré (Pistacchio & Orange Blossom Tart is TO DIE FOR)
  • Pierre Hermé

2. Rome, Italy

The ideal time to visit Europe is in September and visit Rome, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, as the scorching summer heat starts to fade. Explore the ancient ruins of the Colosseum, wander through the historic streets of the Roman Forum, and toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain for good luck! Don’t miss the opportunity to savour authentic Italian/Roman cuisine (carbonara & cacio e pepe) and gelato.

Prices will be more affordable so rent yourself a scooter and roam around like a true local. Don’t forget to add Vatican City to your list!

3. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague’s fairytale-like charm, is enhanced in September. It’s one of the best European destinations to visit. The city’s medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, and picturesque bridges create a magical atmosphere. Visit Prague Castle, stroll across the iconic Charles Bridge, and explore the charming Old Town. Enjoy traditional Czech cuisine and sample the world-famous Czech beer.

5. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is a vibrant city that comes alive in September. The weather is pleasant, making it perfect for exploring the city’s architectural wonders, such as the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell. Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of La Rambla, indulge in delicious tapas, and soak up the sun on the beautiful beaches. If you’re in need of an adrenaline rush, save a couple days for Port Aventura, Europe’s 3rd largest theme park.

6. Santorini, Greece

September is an excellent time to visit the stunning island of Santorini. The summer crowds have diminished, allowing you to fully appreciate the breathtaking views of the caldera and the iconic white-washed buildings. Relax on the black sand beaches, explore the charming villages of Oia and Fira, and enjoy the cheaper prices September has to offer. Choose where to stay on my favourite booking website here.

Rent a quad or a scooter to explore without limits, witness unforgettable sunsets and eat delicious pita gyros.

Amsterdam’s picturesque canals and vibrant culture make it a must-visit destination in September. Rent a bike and explore the city like a local, visit the world-class museums, including the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House, and take a scenic boat tour along the canals. The Heineken Museum is a must-see, as well as a stroll down the Red Lights District (because it is a must-see!) and if you’re into smoking green and purple stuff, it is LEGAL in Amsterdam. Also, don’t forget to try some traditional Dutch cheese. Amsterdam is a great city to travel to in September in Europe!

WEATHER IN EUROPE IN SEPTEMBER 2023

In September, the weather in Europe varies depending on the region, but generally, it is a pleasant time to visit with mild temperatures and less rainfall in many areas. Southern Europe has very pleasant and warm weather in September, while Central and Northern Europe are already transitioning to chilly weather. Here’s a brief overview of the weather you can expect in different parts of Europe during September:

Travel to Southern Europe in September:

Countries like Italy, Greece, Spain, and Portugal experience warm and sunny weather in September. Temperatures range from the mid-20s to low 30s degrees Celsius (70s to 90s degrees Fahrenheit), making it ideal for beach visits and outdoor activities. Of course, I still recommend checking the weather forecast – I once booked a 10-day holiday in Sicily, Italy and there was a HUGE storm for 8 days, and everything was closed!

South of France September

Western Europe:

Countries like France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Belgium start transitioning into autumn during September. The South of France still stays very warm, I lived near Marseille for several years and I can assure you September is still considered as Summer. Just make sure you bring extra layers for the chillier nights. Temperatures range from the mid-teens to low 20s degrees Celsius (50s to 70s degrees Fahrenheit). While it can still be relatively mild, it’s advisable to pack layers and be prepared for occasional rain showers.

In Southern and Western Europe, you can wear summer clothing as the temperatures are still very high but do bring extra layers for the occasional chilly nights. Travel in Western Europe in September without any regrets!

Monaco September

Central Europe:

Countries like Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic experience pleasant weather in September. Temperatures range from the mid-teens to low 20s degrees Celsius (50s to 70s degrees Fahrenheit). It’s a great time to explore cities, visit castles, and enjoy outdoor activities like hiking.

Austria September

Northern Europe:

Countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark start transitioning into autumn during September. Temperatures range from the single digits to low 10s degrees Celsius (40s to 50s degrees Fahrenheit). It can be cooler and more unpredictable – be prepared for rain!

In Central and Northern Europe, the weather can be pretty unpredictable, so I recommend packing mostly warm clothes, yet still a few lights clothing items for those sunny days. September might not be the best month to travel in Northern Europe if you’re looking for warm temperatures.

FESTIVALS IN EUROPE IN SEPTEMBER – DATES 2023

September is also a vibrant month when it comes to festivals in Europe, offering a wide range of cultural, music, and food celebrations.

Here are a few notable few of the things to do in Europe in September:

OktoberFest, Germany

Oktoberfest – Munich, Germany – Sept 16th to Oct. 3rd: Despite its name, Oktoberfest actually begins in late September and runs into early October. It is the world’s largest beer festival, attracting millions of visitors from around the globe. Enjoy traditional Bavarian music, food, and, of course, BEER in the lively atmosphere of Munich.

– La Mercè – Barcelona, Spain – Sept. 22nd to 25th: La Mercè is a vibrant festival held in Barcelona to honor the city’s patron saint, La Mercè. It features a week-long celebration with street parades, fireworks, live music performances, and traditional Catalan dances. It’s a fantastic opportunity to experience the rich culture and traditions of Barcelona.

Lollapalooza Festival – Berlin, Germany – Sept. 9th/10th: Lollapalooza Berlin is an electrifying celebration of music, culture, and creativity that captures the vibrant spirit of one of Europe’s most dynamic cities. Enjoy a wide range of music artists as well as art installations and immersive experiences.

LollaPallooza festival

– Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival – Lisdoonvarna, Ireland: The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival is a unique event held in the small town of Lisdoonvarna, Ireland. It is one of Europe’s largest matchmaking festivals, where people gather to find love or simply enjoy the lively atmosphere of music, dancing, and traditional Irish culture.

These are just a few of my favorite examples, and there are many more festivals happening across Europe in September.

Remember to check travel restrictions, local guidelines, and safety precautions before planning your trip. Each destination offers a unique experience, from cultural landmarks to culinary delights.

Embrace the beauty of Europe in September and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.

Bon voyage!
